New! - DART Detail: English Language Learners

This month, DESE formally introduced the DART Detail: English Language Learners. This Excel-based tool provides you with detailed information (not readily available before) about English language learners in reports that compare two districts, or the schools within a district. Included are data such as:

  • Enrollment rates for FLNE, ELL, and FELL students
  • ELL students’ first languages (most common and total number)
  • Recent immigrants’ countries of origin (most common and total number)
  • MEPA performance by domain (reading, writing, speaking, listening)
  • MCAS achievement gap comparisons for ELL, FELL, and Non-ELL/Non-FELL students
  • MCAS/MEPA crosswalk data
  • ELL student indicators such as attendance, chronic absence, stability, suspension, retention, dropout, and graduation rates
  • School and district ELL-related staffing
  • Title III district allocations

A beta version of the DART Detail: ELLs was posted in December. Since then, the tool has been finalized and updated with 2011-12 enrollment data and a DART Detail: ELLs User Guide is posted.

The DART website has been redesigned and is now located at http://www.doe.mass.edu/apa/dart/.

Early Warning Indicator System (EWIS) 2011-12 Data Released

The January 13th Commissioner's Update announced the release of the 2011-12 version of the Early Warning Indicator System (EWIS). The EWIS (formerly "EWII") assigns high school freshmen one of five risk levels for not graduating on time. DESE provides detailed student rosters via the Security Portal in the "Accountability 2011 Data Dropbox" in Dropbox Central. In addition, DESE provides
  • a tool that automatically calculates risk levels for students who are not listed on the roster,
  • aggregate EWIS information for all districts, and
  • a guidance document that provides information on how the risk levels are calculated.
Please read the Commissioner's Update for more details!
